Bonsai at the NC Arboretum in Asheville

The NC Arboretum in Asheville now hosts the only public collection of bonsai in the Carolinas.  The Bonsai Caretaker, Arthur Joura, has studied with Yuji Yoshimura, one of America’s foremost bonsai teachers, Bob Drechsler, curator of the National Collection for 20 years,  Dan Chiplis of the National Arboretum, and in 1998 he went to Japan for a month to study with Susumu Nakamura, a Director of the Nippon Bonsai Society.  The Arboretum's bonsai collection is available for viewing Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM and Wednesdays from 8:30 AM - 2:00 PM at the Greenhouse facility.   The North Carolina Arboretum hosts the annual Carolina Bonsai Expo the second weekend of each October, featuring the work of bonsai enthusiasts from North and South Carolina, as well as selections from the Arboretum's own collection.  Call (828) 665-2492.  The NC Arboretum is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. From I-26, take Exit 2 to Highway 191 south for 2 miles.  Look for the sign directing you to the Visitor Center
